Can I sell on Etsy?

Etsy is a unique marketplace for handmade items, vintage goods, and craft supplies. On Etsy.com, you’ll find a community of makers, small-business owners, and shoppers who all share a passion for uncommon and rare goods.

Before you start an Etsy shop, make sure that your products can be sold on Etsy, and that you’re in a location where selling on Etsy Payments is available. Review their seller policies and learn about fees for selling on Etsy to make sure that selling on Etsy is right for you and your business.

What’s a handmade item?

Handmade items are items that are designed and/or created by you, the seller. This includes fully handcrafted items like spun pottery or knitted scarves. It also includes things like enamel pins that you design and work with a production partner to manufacture. It doesn’t include items that you purchased and are reselling, even if those items were handmade by someone else. Handmade items must be created or designed by you.

What’s a vintage item?

Vintage items must be at least 20 years old. Vintage items can include clothing, housewares, electronics, and more! However, if an item is less than 20 years old, it can’t be sold as a vintage item on Etsy.

What are craft supplies?

Craft supplies on Etsy are tools, ingredients, or materials whose primary purpose is to create an item or throw a special occasion. Craft supplies may be handmade, commercial, or vintage. Party supplies may also be sold as craft supplies.

What products are prohibited on Etsy?

Even if your products are handmade, vintage, or craft supplies, you may not be able to sell them on Etsy if they’re in a prohibited category. Make sure you review and understand their policies before listing items. Prohibited items include tobacco, drugs or drug paraphernalia, weapons, hazardous materials, and others. Items that use the intellectual property of someone else, even if you designed or created the item, aren’t allowed either.

Review their Prohibited Items Policy to check if you can sell your products on Etsy.

You must also follow local laws in your area. There may be certain things in your area that can’t be sold or shipped.

What if Etsy Payments isn’t available in my country?

Currently, you can only open an Etsy shop in a country where Etsy Payments is available. Etsy can only offer payment services in certain countries at this time. Etsy is working to support additional countries in the future.

Stay tuned to the Site Updates section of Etsy’s Seller Handbook for updates.

Do I need a business license to sell on Etsy?

Etsy doesn’t require sellers to have a business license to sell on Etsy.

However, when selling on Etsy you’re required to follow any laws that apply to you as a small business selling online. If you have any questions regarding which laws apply to you, please contact a qualified professional.

Set your shop preferences

Select your shop’s language, country, currency, and time commitment:

  • Shop language: The shop language you choose is the default language you use to describe your items. You won’t be able to change it later, but if you’d like to add translations in other languages, you will be able to enroll in other languages after opening your shop.
  • Shop country: Be sure to select the correct country for your shop.
  • Shop currency: Choose the currency you will use to price your listings. Currency conversion fees may apply if your bank’s currency is different from your shop currency.
  • Time commitment: Select whether selling your products is your full-time job or part-time job. This question is for informational purposes only and will not affect the setup of your shop.

Next: Choose your shop name.

Then: Stock your shop.

Set up your payment and billing details

To get paid on Etsy, you need to connect your bank account to your Etsy shop.

How you’ll get paid:

  6. Select Open your shop. Congratulations! Your Etsy shop is now live on Etsy.com. You can still add listings and make changes to your shop.

You can add a prepaid card to your account if you already have a credit or debit card. A non- reloadable prepaid card can’t be your only or primary payment card, but you can always pay your bill manually with a non-reloadable prepaid card.

Learn more about Etsy Payments.

For sellers in the US

A small test deposit should appear in your account within three to seven days. This is a courtesy to let you know that deposits are working properly. Once you see the deposit, no further action is required on your part.

For sellers in the EU, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, or the UK

If your bank account is located in the EU, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, or the UK, you will need to verify your bank account before you can receive any funds from your sales for compliance purposes.

Within 3-5 business days of enrolling in Etsy Payments, Etsy will send a small deposit, processed by third party payment partners, Adyen or WorldPay, to your bank account. You’ll need to enter the small deposit amount in your Payment account in order to verify your bank account for compliance purposes.

If you’re setting up a new shop, you’ll receive a small deposit to your bank account after you open your shop to the public. No deposit will be sent to your bank account while your shop is in draft mode.

You’ll receive emails from Etsy to remind you to verify your bank account to continue to get paid.

To verify your bank account:

  1. On Etsy.com or the Sell on Etsy app, click Shop Manager.
  2. Click Finances.
  3. Click Payment account.
  4. Click Verify bank.
  5. Enter the amount of the small deposit received in your bank account.
  6. Click Verify bank.

You will also see a Verify bank button in Shop Manager under the Shop advisor section. This will link directly to verifying your bank account.

If the Verify bank button on the popup is not active, wait until you receive the small deposit in your bank account and then try to verify your bank account on Etsy.

If you don’t verify your bank account within 90 days of updating your bank details, your shop will be suspended.

For sellers in Australia

Sellers in Australia must have a residential address on file with their Australian bank. This address must be used for Etsy Payments. Currently Etsy is unable to accept a PO box as a residential address.

You can update your address in Shop Manager.

Turn on two-factor authentication

As a security measure, Etsy requires you to set up two-factor authentication. When you sign in from an unrecognized browser or device, we’ll send you a verification code to enter before accessing your account. You can receive this verification code through:

  • An authenticator app on your Android or iOS device (Recommended)
  • An SMS
  • A phone call

Learn more about two-factor authentication.

How To Finally Be Successful At Selling Online

In this article I’m going to be discussing how to set yourself up to win with your online business. Access to wealth has never been easier with the availability of so many tools and resources. Yet many people still struggle with making one sale a month. Here you will learn the basics of what it takes to have a thriving brand.

When I launched my most recent business I wanted it to be more successful than any project that I had previously ran. In the past I had online stores that made a profit but not consistently. I was ready for change and I vowed to take the business steps necessary to make that happen.

One of the first things I decided to do differently was selling products that people wanted as opposed to what I personally liked. I am an artist and I realized that my personal taste in products was holding me back. I liked what I was selling but it wasn’t attracting everyday customers. My biggest profits would be from creations going viral in an art group on social media or during the holiday times and this wasn’t a sustainable method for running a company at all.

Before launching my spiritual business I researched products within that genre, common items that were sought after by people on their faith based journey. Next I decided to launch on the platform Shopify. A millionaire who I have followed on social media for years who lives in my same city recommended the platform about two years ago and after looking into the pricing and apps I decided to go with them.

I opened my business and the sales started immediately coming in. I was nervous that this was beginners luck so I decided to communicate with some business coaches and ask them for advice. After putting the word out within my network I found myself in communication with a guy who claimed to be a Shopify expert. One of the first things he told me was that I needed a sliding banner and that my photos of my products looked unprofessional on a white and gray marble background.

The thing was, before speaking to him I had set my website up to mimic similar niche websites that I saw were highly successful. And my photos, though not on an all white background the product photography was on point and looked good. (I taught myself how to properly take product photography years ago). Therefore I know about lighting and avoiding too many props. I told him I wasn’t taking his advice and he replied, “What do you mean, ‘No’?” Personally, I felt everything he said was wrong with my website he told all of his clients because it was pretty much the same suggested layout most articles recommend for e-commerce websites to look like.

Next, I was contacted by a business coach in Belgium and we set up a video meeting to discuss if we would be a good match to work together. I had a feeling beforehand he wasn’t going to be able to offer me anything but I followed through with the virtual meeting. As he asked me about my products, how much I made so far and my long term goals, I didn’t feel sold on his services. Though he sounded impressed it was his job to also find something wrong with my brand. He stated after going on to my website he didn’t find the product descriptions “moving” and that they needed to tell more of a story. I had only been open online two weeks and I had already sold out of items so I knew my descriptions weren’t an issue.

I realized that I was searching for answers I already knew.

When setting up an e-commerce website it boils down to three things that matter most: Products, Photography and Pricing.

Product research can be done by viewing the top selling products on major shopping websites such as Amazon, Etsy, and EBay. Another way to determine what products will be good to provide your customers is by looking at competitors in your niche and seeing what items they have in common. These items are what customers are buying regularly.

When it comes to product photography what matters is that the customer immediately knows what’s for sale in the image without having to guess. It isn’t blurry and not edited too much to where what they receive in the mail looks nothing like what they were viewing when shopping online.

Now, we have pricing. You always want to make a profit so make sure that you are working with the best suppliers. Always make your investment back plus extra. Start off by setting your prices at a little bit lower than your competitors or at the average price that a particular item is sold for. As business increases you can then decide if you want to raise your prices.

To really be successful it takes a team. One thing I learned is that no matter how much knowledge you have, you can’t do everything alone. Shopify has thousands of apps to help you with your business including affiliate marketing services to where you can have other people who are seeking to earn a profit help you grow your business. Adding this feature teaches you about leadership and strongly helps with creating brand awareness when you are just starting out.

Another thing that you want to do is collect emails to update customers. Yes, Shopify provides apps to create this funnel as well. Emailing customers helps establish your identity. You want send out emails for holiday sales, new item releases, restocked items, when hiring, new locations, giveaways, and general company news that you wish to share with the public.

Don’t invest in a business coach who you don’t feel comfortable with. I had free consultations and I knew the individuals were not the types of people who I would want to work with long term. Also don’t invest in advertising on social media before researching your target audience, you’ll be paying for your ad to be shown to people who are just going to swipe past it.

When it comes to social media, use programs that can automatically post 3-5 times a day for you. Share professional looking photos and relevant content. Mimic what bigger brands post but create your own style. If you do reshare trending or attractive content tag the person. Be sure to post reviews, screenshots of customers thank you messages and only repost quality customer images of them using your products.

Best Regards,

K. Crystal Carter
