An Oversaturated Way To Make Passive Income That Still Works

Last summer when I needed to learn how to make money fairly quickly online with a 1 year old and after being left by a narcissist who depleted my bank account and ruined my credit I got to work. I learned so much in such a short amount of time I can honestly say if it wasn’t for the situation my ex put me in I wouldn’t be as successful as I am today. This was my dedication to myself to build myself back up after being torn down completely.

Now the word or term ‘narcissist’ gets thrown around a lot and typically it takes for an individual to seek help to get diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. As I was learning new business methods I was healing at the same time. In constantly reading I somehow came across narcissist personality traits. It was scary how accurate every article was. I finally understood why with all that I was learning I wasn’t immediately successful at the things I applied.

I needed to heal from 4 years of being abused mentally and financially.

Once I recognized that my brain started to clear up. It was like I had this fog that was blocking me from seeing what was right in front of me. Out of the many skills I learned self publishing was the one that I favored the most. See publishing a book was something I wanted to do since I was a child.

And self publishing was listed in every passive income article that I would read. So I joined self publishing, low content making, and Amazon publishing groups on Facebook. I also found YouTube to be very helpful in teaching lessons about the process. I thought to myself, “It can’t be this easy.” But it was.

Everything you need to self publish for $0 down is at your fingertips. Accessible on your smartphone in other words. From the information to get you started to the apps to design your covers and interiors. I was on a roll with creating books. I started off with journals, moved on to low content books, next there were workbooks, and when I was ready I wrote nonfiction books of my own.

I will admit that keyword research is a skill in itself but this can be understood by watching YouTube videos, reading articles online or paying for a third party provider. You need to understand how keywords work to make your books easier to find when customers are shopping online. It’s competitive to self publish and be profitable, but with dedication to being successful you will master this if you truly want to.

To design my book covers and interiors I use the app Canva. Prior to books I used the program to create social media posts, and website media. Canva is free to download in the app store. After a year of enjoying the free version I decided to invest in the Pro version because of its added features. You don’t necessarily need to pay for the app monthly subscription if you don’t want to or have the funds.

What I like about Canva is how ridiculously easy it is to use and yet how professional your designs come out. Don’t know where to start with making a book cover? No worries, there are templates for that. Use the templates as a starting point, change the colors, change the fonts, add relative elements, but just don’t use and publish the exact templates that you find in Canva. I’ve seen so many books and journals online (Amazon specifically) where the person didn’t change anything from the templates and honestly people notice repeat covers when shopping online.

Another helpful way to get ideas for covers is to get inspiration from books you see online. Look at best sellers in that particular genre and see what works for best selling authors. I’ve learned you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, just give your product a ‘wow factor.’

I forgot to mention, you do need to know the size measurements or dimensions but this also can be found on YouTube, Amazon KPD (if that’s who you decide to self publish with), and in articles on Google or Pinterest. You literally have everything you need in your hand to get started.

After you have your book design ready it’s time to upload it. I use Amazon KDP because it’s as simple as you upload it, it gets approved within a couple of days, it’s then made available for customers to order through and that’s it. They print and ship for you so there are no worries about having to store inventory and go to the post office for shipping.

Here below is one of my best selling workbooks that I ordered an authors copy of. The quality is actually amazing and the image on Amazon is a bit pixelated due to their program. It’s great that they give you the option to order copies because if you do want to sell from your own website or provide your books to local stores, you can. 5 Resources You Need To Self Publish Your First Book

It used to be where if you wanted to write and publish a book you had to contact a publishing agency, and hope that they felt your book was marketable. You also had to hope that they didn’t like and steal the concept of your book. It was an intimating process for some.

Owning a bookshelf with books that you actually read was a big thing for many before the mass popularity of the internet, and way before the Kindle. If you borrowed someone’s book, they wanted it returned because they were going to read it again, or it was a beloved part of their collection. Today, downloading ebooks onto our phones is more common. But, there is still something about holding a physical book that gives it meaning.

To have written a book holds prestige.

I remember when I first learned about the option to publish a book on your own (self publish). I thought it was creative and amazing that you didn’t have to go through what seemed to be a rigorous process to have your book published for the world to read. Unfortunately, when self publishing first became popular people didn’t consider the importance of the visual aspect or marketing. In other words, many of these books didn’t look professional. Previously, I would see independently published books with interesting art on the covers, illegible fonts, and sometimes no title on the cover as a way to “standout” and be “creative.” Yet, the author was still proud of his accomplishment.

With the accessibly of technology, and the internet, a buyer can no longer tell the difference of some books that were self published or published by a company. You still have those who could use a bit of help, and that’s what (or who) this article is for.

When a writer writes a book it is first and foremost for them. A project that they dedicated personal time to, or a story they felt compelled to share with the world. If that individual is presenting this book with a plan, it is then for that specific target audience. Meaning, how visually attractive the book is matters. It matters a whole lot.

Currently, I have self published 25 books (and counting) that I completed using Amazon KDP. Below are the top 5 tools that I use.

Your cover can sell your book better than you can. Having an eye catching cover draws people in. If you aren’t as savvy with graphic design, I would highly recommend hiring a freelance artist on The website connects you with professional and talented individuals from around the world. Many of which design book covers specifically.

I use this website to promote my design services, but I also use the website for others graphic editing services. You can find someone to do pretty much any service you need.

2. Canva

The book cover template heaven. Sometimes all we need is an example or layout and we’ve got it from there. is an amazing simple graphic design software that is available for desktop and phone. What I like about the mobile app is that there isn’t much of a difference and you are able use the program in the same way as you would on your computer.

With the templates search option not only are you able to review different cover designs but you can use Canva to create your interior design as well.


The service offers its users a web and mobile application which allows users to manipulate documents and/or images through online comprehensive software. As you start creating books you learn about how different programs work, with the previously mentioned program Canva, the user can download a PDF file up to 100 pages. I was getting ready to finish a 250 page book when I realized my pages were cut off. The website allows you to combine PDFs so that your books manuscript is longer.

How many words does your book need?

The average short story is 5,000 to 10,000 words and when writing a book the best way to keep track of your wordcount is by creating your manuscript in Microsoft Word or uploading it to Word from whatever program that you are using. At the bottom of the document the exact number of words typed will show.

Bonus: Book Marketing Tip

For me, I create books as a hobby, having fun with designing the covers myself and researching the proper keywords. For some, the goal might be to create one great book and live off of it’s income for a few years or longer. (Self publishing is a great passive income source.)
